The Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) FEB UGM has held an open examination for the promotion of Doctor of Management Science for a Ph.D. candidate, Mychelia Champaca. Prof. Nurul Indarti, Sivilokonom, Cand.Merc., Ph.D., Head of the Management Doctoral Program, acted as Chair of the Session. In this Open Examination, presented Prof. Mamduh M. Hanafi, M.B.A., Ph.D. as a promoter, and I Wayan Nuka Lantara, M.Si., Ph.D. also Bowo Setiyono, M.Com., Ph.D., M.B.A. as co-promoter. In addition, the assessment team was also present, which included Prof. Eduardus Tandelilin, M.B.A., Ph.D., Eddy Junarsin, M.B.A., Ph.D., and Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, M.Sc., Ph.D. The team of examiners in this trial was Agus Setiawan, M.Soc., Ph.D. and Prof. Marwan Asri, M.B.A., Ph.D. Also attending were the families of the doctoral candidates, work relatives from Universitas Brawijaya, and invited guests.
The open doctoral promotion examination was opened by the chairman of the session and then given chances to the promoter, co-promoter, assessment team, and examiner team to ask questions related to the dissertation that has been done. The Ph.D. candidate was able to answer questions well and fluently and defended the argument for her dissertation entitled “Market Structure, Risk, and Performance: Empirical Study of the Microfinance Institutions Sector,” so that she successfully graduated with the predicate “satisfying.”
For information, Dr. Mychelia Champaca focuses on empirical studies of the microfinance sector. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of market structure on the risk and performance of the microfinance sector, particularly rural banks (BPR). Thus, this study uses three variables, which were tested using the theoretical framework of structure, behavior, and performance or known as SCP and the theory that links competition and risk. The thing that underlies Dr. Mychelia raised the topic that there were still limited previous studies that tested market structure with SCP theory and associated risk as conduct, especially in the microfinance sector.
The test in this study uses dynamic and static panel data, where dynamic panel data serves to overcome endogeneity issues. This research is interesting because it has several novelties, including using dynamic and static panel data, using data on the entire population from BPRs, testing market structures by involving risk as conduct and using theories that link competition and risk.
In this study, SCP theory is used because it underlies the relationship between competition and performance. Thus, a test was conducted on the effect of competition on financial performance (profitability, efficiency, and credit payments). Based on the results, when competition is tested for its effect on profitability, it reduced profitability. When competition is tested for its effect on efficiency, the result is that competition reduces efficiency. The results also show that competition has the effect of lowering credit payments. The next test is about the relationship between competition and risk. The results show that competition will increase the risk.
This lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Brawijaya officially holds the 5463rd doctoral degree who passed the exam at Universitas Gadjah Mada and the 315th who passed the exam at FEB UGM. Prof. Mamduh M. Hanafi, M.B.A., Ph.D. as the promoter congratulated Dr. Mychelia, her family, and her institution about her achievement on a doctoral degree. Prof. Mamduh wished her a happy return to serve Dr. Mychelia and reminded her that her graduation from this doctoral program is the beginning of a new chapter in her academic life. Thus, hopefully, the knowledge gained can be a provision in contributing. He ordered that Dr. Mychelia still maintains the good name of her alma mater and always keep in communication. (Y)
