Yogyakarta, February 8th – 9th, 2023
The Master of Science and Doctoral Program FEB UGM held the Academic Briefing and Researchers’ Enrichment Program (REACH Program) for new students in the Even Semester of 2022/2023. This activity lasted for two days, Wednesday-Thursday, February 8th-9th, 2023. This activity for new students was held offline which took place at the MD FEB UGM Auditorium. All students from the Master of Science and Doctoral Program attended all activity.
The First Day
On the first day, the event began with welcome greetings, remarks, and reports from the representatives of MD FEB UGM manager, Prof. Catur Sugiyanto, M.A., Ph.D., as the Head of the Doctoral Program in Economics. The report includes the number of active students, teaching staff, education staff, and alumnae of MD FEB UGM. The number of new student admissions also conveyed in the reporting session. Prof. Catur also said that studying at MD was very enjoyable and a REACH moment. This program aims to improve students’ abilities as academic leaders and reliable researchers.
In session I, Prof. Jogiyanto Hartono M., M.B.A., Ph.D., conveyed the vision and mission, the values of FEB, and the curriculum from the Master of Science and Doctoral Program of FEB UGM. This vision and mission must be known as an effort to achieve common goals. The values of FEB UGM (integrity, professionalism, objectivity and equality, academic freedom, social care) must also be known and applied as guidelines for behaving according to the culture and identity of FEB UGM. The MD FEB UGM program greatly facilitates learning and encourages optimal study success, resulting in useful and impactful learners. The outputs to be achieved are students who have strong knowledge in theory, produce contributing academic research, and have publications in reputable journals.
In session II, new students also got information about the academic and non-academic rules of the MD FEB UGM Program from Prof. Mamduh Mahmadah Hanafi, M.B.A., Ph.D. and Mrs. Heni Wahyuni, M.Ec.Dev., Ph.D. The competency goals and keys to success in learning were also presented. Mrs. Heni also conveyed about the stages of guidance and monitoring in writing theses and dissertations. To support study success, reference subscription facilities are also available in the form of reputable journals and e-books.
In session III, there was a presentation on Campus Life and Time Management by Prof. Catur Sugiyanto, M.A., Ph.D. The beautiful and aesthetic atmosphere of the UGM campus makes learning even more fun, so the level of happiness can increase. The MD FEB UGM program can facilitate various student needs, starting from classrooms, discussion rooms, laboratories, and sports rooms, to the international journal subscription facilities. Several tourist destinations in Yogyakarta are also quite a lot as a refreshing medium. Campus life will run smoothly and optimally by implementing time management. Effective timing will reduce problems and complaints.
The next session was the introduction of organizations at MD FEB UGM, namely Forkomsi (Master of Science Communication Forum) and IMADEBGAMA (Doctoral Student Association FEB UGM). Izzul Islam Noor Mustain, Head of Forkomsi, and Jein Sriyana Toyib, Head of IMADEBGAMA, were present to give a brief presentation about the organization, the purpose of establishment, and work programs. In this session, also given a briefing on activities for the second day of the academic briefing.
The last session on the first day was the UGM Philosophy Seminar, which accompanied by Prof. Dr. dr. Sutaryo, Sp.A.(K), and became a very extraordinary event because it told the origins of the founding of UGM, UGM’s work, UGM values, and the philosophical value of the UGM symbol and flag. Thus, new students will know the history of the founding of UGM, which founded by the Indonesian people themselves and is a national university, university of struggle, university of Pancasila, university of the people, and university of cultural center (5 UGM identities). Two of UGM’s philosophical values are (1) science, reality, truth, and (2) Pancasila and Indonesian culture.
The Second Day
The program on the second day began with morning exercise guided by Forkomsi and IMADEBGAMA. At 07.00 WIB, Prof. Catur Sugiyanto, M.A., Ph.D., Head of the Doctoral Program in Economics, representative of the MD FEB UGM manager, officially opened the Reach Program on the second day and followed by a speech. The activity continued with a group photo by all participants, managers, and MD education staff, which took place in the front yard of the MD FEB UGM Building and FEB UGM Building. There was a symbolic release of doves and balloons for welcome new students of MD FEB UGM. The event continued with a scholar’s day out to introduce the campus environment to new students, which ended with breakfast together.
Session I on the second day was material from Prof. Dr. Jogiyanto Hartono M., M.B.A., Ph.D. regarding Student-Centered Learning (SCL). He conveyed several criticisms of education, where the learning system must be centered on the learner, balanced between hard skills and soft skills, providing theory and practice, strengthening research and theoretical concepts, strengthening analytical power, and strengthening character.
Session II is the presentation of the Academic Support Tools by Prof. Catur Sugiyanto, M.A., Ph.D. In this session, he explained all the facilities and infrastructure in the MD FEB UGM and FEB UGM buildings facilitate the smooth and successful study. Prof. Catur also introduced educational staff and assistants at MD FEB UGM.
Session III contained Student Mental Health materials from Mr. Haryanta, S.Psi., Psi., M.A. Mental health is very important to maintain for improving the quality of life, which requires high resilience to face various challenges. A positive environment also needed for increase resiliency.
The next session was an explanation of filling out the KRS from the MD FEB UGM academic team. This explanation aims to provide understanding for new students regarding the procedure for filling out the KRS and what courses need to take.
In the afternoon session, there was communication skill material from Mrs. Rina Herani, S.E., M.Sc. Communication skills are very important to learn because they are closely related to the learning system at MD FEB UGM, namely SCL, which demands an active role from the learner. Good and effective communication skills are needed in the academic field, so minimizing distractions and increasing concentration need to be emphasized to obtain a good and correct understanding. The series of events on the second day ended with a session on Academic Document Writing and Anti-Plagiarism delivered by Mrs. Widya Paramita, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D. She explained the meaning of plagiarism, its types, and how to overcome them.
The second day of the event ended with the distribution of prizes for the winners of the competitions held, namely the MD Photo Contest (twibbonize photo contest, selfie photo) and a group game competition. Three winners were selected from each competition held. Finally, the two-day Reach Program went smoothly. There was a group photo session at the end of the event. (Y)
