The Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) FEB UGM has successfully held a training event, Writing Skills for Publication, on March 8th, 2023. The event was held offline at the Satya Jaya Room Lt.2 MD FEB UGM Building and presented Ms. Widya Paramita, M. Sc., Ph.D., as the speaker. This routine event which included in the Reach Program series for student debriefing, is mandatory for students of the Master of Science Program Batch 2021/2. The event held from 08.00-10.00 WIB.
On this occasion, Mrs. Mita explained the stages of writing a scientific article which consisted of four steps, generating research ideas (observation of phenomena and review of literature), determining methods, analyzing data, and writing processes. In writing scientific articles, it is necessary to review relevant literature to current conditions, so it is sufficient to use previous research published in the last five years for reference. Next, researchers need to analyze the literature by listing the variables used and modifying variables. Next, the researcher considers the interrelationships between variables from different studies and examines the research setting or case. That is important in order to elaborate on relevant and important phenomena to be researched, understand the problems/phenomenon raised, and consider the substantial impact of the problems/phenomenon under study. This point is necessary to avoid the common mistake of choosing a local phenomenon, but not accompanied by strong arguments and lacking a global contribution.
As a guide for writing qualified articles, Mrs. Mita shares interesting tips that make it very easy. First, choose a topic you like and enjoy the writing process. Second, make an outline for guiding in research a phenomenon, so nothing missed. Third, find research gaps and focus on finding points that can answer these gaps. Fourth, determine the research sample, sample size, sample criteria, and the reasons for choosing these criteria as the basis for sample selection. Fifth, overcoming possible research bias.
After the writing process is complete, many things must be going to successfully publish scientific writings, especially in reputable international journals. However, it is a challenge. In the material session, Mrs. Mita revealed that never be afraid of rejection when submitting articles to journals. All of the comments given by reviewers become provisions to improve writing and forge the mentality of a researcher. Keep writing and keep writing because consistency is necessary. (Y)
