MD Research Forum “Rethinking Accountability as a Social Construct: Insight from the NGO Sector”

On Friday, October 3, 2025, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) once again held the MD Research Forum on the topic “Rethinking Accountability as a Social Construct: Insight from the NGO Sector.” This event took place offline from 9:00–11:30 a.m. in the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor of the MD Building, FEB UGM.

The forum featured Amanda Acintya, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D. (Lecturer in the Department of Accounting, FEB UGM) as the keynote speaker. In her presentation, she presented the results of her thesis and dissertation research, which reexamined the concept of accountability not merely as an administrative mechanism but also as a social construct influenced by the organizational context and stakeholder interactions.

Dr. Amanda emphasized that in the NGO sector, accountability cannot be understood narrowly as a formal report alone, but rather needs to be seen as a social practice that reflects values, beliefs, and relationships with beneficiary communities and donor institutions. With this perspective, his research provides new insights into how accountability can promote transparency, build trust, and strengthen organizational legitimacy.

The discussion was interactive, with participants raising critical questions, particularly regarding the implementation of the accountability concept in NGO management practices in Indonesia and globally. This forum provided a space for reflection, enriching insights, opening new perspectives, and encouraging participants to think more critically about the role of accountability in nonprofit organizations.

Dies Natalis MD FEB UGM

On Monday, September 29, 2025, the Master of Science and Doctoral (MD) Program at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University (FEB UGM) held a thanksgiving ceremony to commemorate its 45th anniversary in the lobby of the MD Building.

The event opened with remarks from the Head of the Doctoral Program in Management, Prof. Dr. Mamduh Mahmadah Hanafi, M.B.A., who outlined the various achievements of the MD program. To date, doctoral students have published 39 publications in reputable international journals indexed by Scopus and 43 in national journals indexed by Sinta. Meanwhile, master’s students have published 18 international publications and 25 national publications.

In addition to publications, MD FEB UGM also continues to strengthen its global academic network. The master’s program has established dual-degree partnerships with seven international universities, including the University of Glasgow, England. For the doctoral program, dual-degree partnerships with several partner universities abroad are currently being explored.

The Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) UGM, Prof. Dr. Didi Achjari, S.E., M.Com., Akt., also expressed his appreciation for this achievement. In his remarks, he expressed his hope that FEB UGM would continue to maintain its international accreditation while expanding global collaborations, so that more international students and lecturers could study at UGM.

As a symbol of gratitude and renewed enthusiasm, the event concluded with the cutting of a tumpeng (rice cone) by Prof. Dr. Didi Achjari, S.E., M.Com., Akt., which was then handed over to the Head of the Master of Science in Accounting Study Program, Fu’ad Rakhman, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., CA.

Through this momentum of the 45th Anniversary commemoration, the MD of FEB UGM reaffirmed its commitment to continuously improving the quality of education and research, while expanding its benefits to society. This aligns with FEB UGM’s mission to develop future leaders in the fields of economics and business with integrity and a focus on sustainability.

MD Research Forum “Modelling Multi-Level Predictors of Academic E-Entrepreneurship: Empirical Evidence across ASEAN Countries”

On Friday, September 26, 2025, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) of FEB UGM once again held the MD Research Forum with the topic “Modelling Multi-Level Predictors of Academic E-Entrepreneurship: Empirical Evidence across ASEAN Countries.” The event took place offline from 1:30 to 4:00 PM at the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor of the MD FEB UGM Building.

The forum featured Rico Saktiawan Jang Jaya, S.E., MBA, Ph.D. (Lecturer at the Department of Management, FEB UGM) as the keynote speaker. In his presentation, he delivered the findings of his dissertation research, which explored how multi-level factors, including individual, institutional, and environmental aspects, play a role in shaping academic e-entrepreneurship across ASEAN countries.

He emphasized that the development of academic e-entrepreneurship does not solely depend on individual capabilities but is also influenced by institutional support and environmental conditions that foster the creation of academic-based entrepreneurial ecosystems. Thus, this research provides new insights into the importance of cross-level collaboration to strengthen academic innovation in the digital era.

The interactive discussion opened opportunities for participants to ask questions and provide feedback, particularly regarding the practical implications of the research findings for entrepreneurship development in higher education and its potential application across the ASEAN region. Participants showed great enthusiasm by raising critical questions, reflecting a strong interest in gaining a deeper understanding of the dynamics of academic e-entrepreneurship.

Public Lecture “Master Course in Research Method: What Can Researchers Learn from Chess?”

On Friday, August 29, 2025, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) in collaboration with the Department of Economics, FEB UGM, held a public lecture on the engaging topic “Master Course in Research Method: What Can Researchers Learn from Chess?” featuring Dr. David Smerdon (Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland’s School of Economics) as the keynote speaker. This event was held offline from 9:00–11:00 a.m. WIB in the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor of the Master of Science and Doctoral Building, FEB UGM.

In his presentation, Dr. David outlined the relationship between chess strategy and scientific research approaches. He emphasized how researchers can learn from chess principles, from move planning and decision-making under uncertainty to long-term strategic thinking, to improve the quality of research that is more systematic, creative, and impactful.

He also provided concrete examples of the steps in a chess game, from a well-planned opening, adaptive midgame strategy, to the decisive endgame, and related them to the research process, which requires thorough initial planning, dynamic data management, and strong conclusions. The discussion provided inspiring insights for participants to develop more tactical, strategic, and reflective thinking in their academic research journeys.

During the discussion session, participants demonstrated high enthusiasm by raising various critical questions related to the application of chess principles in research. Dr. David emphasized that chess not only trains cognitive skills such as concentration, memory, and pattern analysis, but also teaches the importance of tactical thinking and anticipating several moves ahead. Similarly, in research, a researcher is required to formulate hypotheses, predict various possible outcomes, and prepare alternative strategies when faced with data uncertainty or methodological constraints. Public Lecture with BPJS Kesehatan

On Thursday, August 21, 2025, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in collaboration with BPJS Kesehatan (Indonesian Health Insurance Agency) held a public lecture entitled “The Development of BPJS Kesehatan in the Era of Global Economic Uncertainty & BPJS Kesehatan’s Strategy in This Era.” The lecture featured Prof. Dr. Ali Ghufron Mukti, M.Sc., Ph.D. (President Director of BPJS Kesehatan) as the keynote speaker, moderated by Dr. Novat Pugo Sambodo, a lecturer in the Department of Management Science, FEB UGM. This eventwas held offline from 09:00-11:00 WIB in the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor, Master of Science and Doctoral Building, FEB UGM.

On this occasion, Prof. Ali Ghufron Mukti explained that BPJS Kesehatan faces various challenges amidst global economic uncertainty, ranging from fluctuating macroeconomic conditions, fiscal risks due to increasing healthcare financing burdens, to the challenge of maintaining service quality with a growing number of participants. He emphasized that this situation requires BPJS Kesehatan to remain adaptive and innovative in maintaining financial stability while ensuring equitable and equitable services for all Indonesians. He further outlined several BPJS Kesehatan achievements, including the successful expansion of JKN (National Health Insurance) coverage, which now covers almost the entire population, the implementation of service digitalization to improve efficiency, and increased participant satisfaction through technology-based service innovations.

This public lecture also featured an interactive session, where participants had the opportunity to ask direct questions regarding BPJS Kesehatan’s challenges and strategies. The discussion was dynamic, addressing current issues such as health insurance financing mechanisms, digital-based service transformation, and efforts to strengthen collaboration with various stakeholders. The event concluded with an in-depth discussion between the speakers and participants, which enriched their understanding of BPJS Kesehatan’s role in maintaining the sustainability of the national health system amidst global uncertainty. Through this public lecture, it is hoped that students and academics from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University (UGM) will gain strategic insights into the challenges and opportunities in managing national health insurance.

Workshop Transfer Modality and Domestic Violence: Evidence from Indonesia’s Food Assistance Reform

On Friday, August 15, 2025, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a workshop on the compelling topic “Transfer Modality and Domestic Violence: Evidence from Indonesia’s Food Assistance Reform.” The workshop featured Dhanie Nugroho (Research Assistant, Faculty of Business and Law, Curtin University) as the keynote speaker. The event was moderated by Muhammad Ryan Sanjaya, S.E., MEDEC., Ph.D., a lecturer in the Department of Economics, FEB UGM. The event took place offline from 10:00-11:30 a.m. WIB in the Lippo Room, 2nd Floor of the Master of Science and Doctoral Building, FEB UGM.

In his presentation, Dhanie Nugroho addressed the crucial question of whether social assistance can reduce domestic violence and the most effective forms of assistance in this context. This discussion presented new evidence from Indonesia’s Food Assistance Reform, which has not been widely explored in academic research.

During the question and answer session, participants actively shared their views and questions, which were then directly addressed by the speakers with research-based explanations. The event concluded with a group photo session.

REACH (Researcher ‘s Enrichment Program) Gasal 2025

On August 14–16th, 2025, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) held the Researcher’s Enrichment Program (REACH) 2025, attended by new MD Program students. This activity was designed to introduce the vision, mission, values, and academic culture of FEB UGM while strengthening bonds among students through collaborative activities and self-development.

The first day’s agenda, held in the Master of Science and Doctoral Building, began with an introduction to the vision, mission, and values ​​of FEB UGM by the administrators, followed by an explanation of the curriculum, and an introduction to the student organizations Forkomsi and IMADEBGAMA. The next session included a seminar on UGM’s philosophy by Dr. Heri Santoso, S.S., M.Hum., which provided a deep understanding of UGM’s identity as a people’s university while instilling the values ​​of integrity, scholarship, and social benefit in new students.

The second day, held at Kali Boyong Camp, began with morning exercises and fun games to foster a sense of togetherness. The event then continued with remarks from the program manager and a presentation from MD FEB UGM alumnus, Brian Gregory Adhihendra, S.E., M.Sc., who shared his academic and professional experiences during his studies. Next, participants attended an introductory session on Jogja’s customs and manners, delivered by Dr. Sri Ratna Saktimulya, M.Hum., who explained the cultural insights of Yogyakarta. The second day’s series of activities concluded with academic communication games presented by Tur Nastiti, M.Si., Ph.D., and Indrianingsih, S.Psi., aimed at improving students’ academic communication skills in an interactive setting.

Through these activities, new MD FEB UGM students not only gained an understanding of UGM’s academic culture and values, but also built networks, skills, and a sense of community that will be crucial for their studies

“International Seminar and Publication Forum 2025 – Navigating Global Research Impact: From Local Relevance to Scopus Q1 Publications”

The Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) of FEB UGM, in collaboration with LPDP UGM Chapter, successfully held the International Seminar and Publication Forum 2025 on Thursday, July 24, 2025. The seminar carried the theme “Navigating Global Research Impact: From Local Relevance to Scopus Q1 Publications,” emphasizing the importance of bridging locally relevant research with internationally recognized publication standards.

The event featured keynote speaker Prof. Dr. Hiram Ting, a distinguished academic from Malaysia who was listed among the world’s top 2% scientists in business, management, and marketing by Stanford University and Elsevier in 2024. Prof. Hiram Ting is also known as the Editor-in-Chief of two Scopus Q1-indexed journals (Young Consumers and Journal of Applied Structural Equation Modeling), and currently serves as the President Director of Responsible Borneo (REBORN).

In his presentation, Prof. Hiram Ting provided in-depth insights into strategies for publishing in reputable journals, particularly Scopus Q1 outlets. He emphasized the importance of understanding a journal’s scope and direction, following current research trends, and constructing a strong and relevant scholarly narrative as key factors to increase publication success. He also introduced the concept of authorial positioning, how authors strategically place themselves and their research within the global academic discourse, not merely as contributors but as meaningful voices offering new perspectives.

Moreover, Prof. Hiram Ting highlighted the vital role of international research collaboration and networking in amplifying research impact, enhancing scholarly credibility, and creating opportunities for broader academic partnerships. He also acknowledged the challenges commonly faced by researchers from developing countries, such as limited access to academic journals and references, insufficient writing mentorship, and language barriers. In response, he offered practical advice including joining research communities, actively participating in publication forums, and familiarizing oneself with international academic writing standards.

The seminar, moderated by Riana Ekawati, was held in a hybrid format, on-site at the BRI Auditorium, FEB UGM and online via Zoom, from 08:30 to 11:30 WIB. The session was dynamic and interactive, with enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members, and early-career researchers alike. The forum served as both a reflective space and a motivational platform for the academic community to enhance research impact, strengthen global networks, and elevate the quality of scientific publications. Through initiatives like this, FEB UGM particularly the Master of Science and Doctoral Program reaffirms its commitment to expanding global academic horizons and promoting meaningful research contributions on the international stage.

“Graduation Celebration for the Master of Science and Doctoral Graduates FEB UGM – July 2025”

The Master of Science and Doctoral Program at FEB UGM held a heartfelt and inspiring graduation ceremony on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor of the MD FEB UGM Building. This special event celebrated the graduation of 14 students from the Master of Science Program who had completed their academic journey with exceptional dedication and commitment.

The ceremony began promptly at 12:30 PM (WIB) with an opening report delivered by Mr. Dr. Fu’ad Rakhman, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., CA., the Head of the Master of Science in Accounting Program. In his report, he expressed his gratitude for the achievements of the graduates and appreciated their perseverance, discipline, and relentless pursuit of knowledge throughout their studies. The event continued with a speech from Mr. Dr. Gumilang Aryo Sahadewo, S.E., M.A., Ph.D., representing the Dean’s Office of FEB UGM. He extended his congratulations to the graduates and encouraged them to carry the good name of their alma mater into their professional and academic futures.

The ceremony was made even more memorable by the announcement of Muhamad Satya Ragil Kencono as the outstanding graduate from the Master of Science in Management Program. With a remarkable GPA of 3.97 and cum laude honors, Gili delivered a heartfelt message of gratitude to all lecturers, program administrators, and academic staff for their continuous support and guidance throughout his academic journey at MD FEB UGM. He also shared an uplifting message with fellow graduates, encouraging them to embrace the essence of being lifelong learners—not merely in pursuit of degrees, but by remaining intellectually curious, open to change, and sincerely committed to making a meaningful impact on society. For Gili, being a true learner is not confined to the classroom, it is a lifelong commitment that continues with every step we take.

To conclude the ceremony, the graduates received their academic transcripts directly from the heads of their respective study programs. This was followed by a group photo session filled with joy and meaning, as the graduates captured this special moment alongside program leaders and administrators. The entire event was marked by warmth, gratitude, and pride, serving as a reminder that graduation is not the end, but the beginning of a greater journey of contribution and purpose.
