Guest Lecture: “Adolescents Girls, Agency and Appetite: Evidence from a Food Voucher Experiment in High Schools in Indonesia”

On Thursday, December 4, 2025, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a guest lecture on the topic “Adolescent Girls, Agency, and Appetite: Evidence from a Food Voucher Experiment in High Schools in Indonesia.” The keynote speaker was Dr. Robert Sparrow from Wageningen University and Research. The event was held offline from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM WIB in the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor of the Master of Science and Doctoral Building, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UFG).

In this guest lecture, Dr. Robert Sparrow presented the results of experimental research on the use of food vouchers in high schools in Indonesia, focusing on adolescent girls’ behavior, decision-making ability (agency), and consumption choices. He explained how voucher-based interventions can influence eating patterns, food preferences, and adolescents’ levels of control and freedom in making nutritional choices. Participants showed great enthusiasm, especially when Dr. Sparrow reviewed empirical evidence linking adolescent girls’ empowerment with access to resources and changes in healthier consumption behavior.

The discussion session was interactive, with students raising questions about experimental methodology, policy implications, and opportunities for further research. Through this activity, participants are expected to gain new insights into experimental approaches in social policy research and a deeper understanding of nutrition and youth empowerment issues in Indonesia. Executive Lecture Series: Sport Economics

On Monday, December 1, 2025, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) FEB UGM held an Executive Lecture Series featuring an insightful discussion on “Sport Economics.” The session invited Prof. Robert Simmons from Lancaster University as the keynote speaker and took place onsite from 10:00 to 12:00 WIB at the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor, MD FEB UGM Building.

In his presentation, Prof. Robert Simmons explained how sport economics has evolved into a strategic field that integrates market analysis, consumer behavior, sports industry management, and public policy. Participants showed great enthusiasm, especially during the discussion on data and economic models commonly used to analyze club performance, audience behavior, and the economic impact of major sporting events. The interactive Q&A session allowed students and faculty members to explore global sports industry trends and potential research opportunities in sport economics.

Through this Executive Lecture Series, MD FEB UGM hopes that students can broaden their understanding of how economic principles are applied within the rapidly growing sports industry. The event concluded with a group photo session, marking the end of an inspiring and insightful discussion that enriched the academic perspectives of all participants.

Thesis Coaching: Common Method Bias Testing Methods

On Friday, November 28, 2025, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) FEB UGM held its routine thesis coaching session titled “Methods for Testing Common Method Bias.” The session invited Dr. Ridwan Saptoto, S.Psi., M.A., Psychologist, a faculty member from the Faculty of Psychology UGM, as the main speaker. The event took place offline from 09:00 to 11:30 WIB at the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor, MD FEB UGM Building.

During the session, Dr. Ridwan Saptoto delivered an in-depth explanation of various methods used to detect and minimize Common Method Bias (CMB), a methodological issue frequently encountered in social and business research. He

discussed the fundamental concept of CMB, common sources of bias, and its potential impact on the validity of research findings. Several testing techniques, including Harman’s Single Factor Test, CFA Marker Technique, and latent variable approaches, were systematically presented to help students select the most appropriate method for their research design.

Participants showed high enthusiasm throughout the session, especially during discussions on interpreting statistical outputs and practical strategies to prevent CMB during instrument design and data analysis. The Q&A session was actively used by students to consult on methodological challenges they faced in their thesis projects, resulting in an interactive and applicable discussion. This thesis coaching session is expected to strengthen students’ methodological understanding and support them in producing research that is more valid, reliable, and aligned with academic standards.

Thesis Coaching: The Role of Mediation Variables in Multivariate Analysis Models

On Friday, October 18, 2024, the Master of Science and Doctoral (MD) Program of FEB UGM successfully held a regular thesis coaching session titled “The Role of Mediation Variables in Multivariate Analysis Models,” featuring Mrs. Naila Zulfa, M.A., M.S., PGDip., Ph.D., FHEA, a lecturer from the Department of Management, FEB UGM.  

The event was conducted in-person from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM WIB at the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor, Master of Science and Doctoral Building, FEB UGM.  

In this thesis coaching session, students had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of mediating variables, which are often found in various multivariate research studies. Mrs. Naila Zulfa provided an introductory overview of mediation variables in multivariate analysis models, starting from general concepts to the vital role of mediation variables in clarifying the mechanism of relationships between independent and dependent variables, along with their statistical analysis. She demonstrated a dynamic teaching style by presenting examples with step-by-step explanations, engaging directly with the participants, and even using the whiteboard to clarify key concepts. 

This session also opened a session for participants to discuss and share their challenges in data analysis processes, with several students showing interest in the topic of the coaching session. The discussion between students and the lecturer was highly interactive, with numerous inputs from the lecturer offering solutions to their concerns before the thesis coaching session was officially concluded.

Social & Behavioural Science Doctoral Colloquium

On Thursday and Friday, November 20–21, 2025, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) FEB UGM once again held the Social & Behavioral Science Doctoral Colloquium. This event featured outstanding speakers, namely Prof. Ramayah Thurasamy (Professor, Universiti Sains Malaysia) and Prof. Hiram Ting (President, Responsible Borneo [REBORN]). On the first day, the session was moderated by Muhammad Ryan Sanjaya, S.E., M.Int.Dev.Ec., Ph.D. (Lecturer, Department of Economics, FEB UGM), while on the second day it was moderated by Naila Zulfa, M.A., M.S., PGDip., Ph.D., FHEA. (Lecturer, Department of Management, FEB UGM). This activity was held offline from 09.00–15.00 WIB in the Lippo Room, 2nd Floor, Master of Science and Doctoral Building, FEB UGM. The colloquium opened with a presentation by Prof. Ramayah, who provided comprehensive insights into article writing strategies that meet the standards of reputable international journals. He discussed various important aspects, from selecting relevant topics and developing strong arguments to techniques for presenting research findings to attract the attention of editors and reviewers. Following this, Prof. Hiram Ting delivered a short presentation emphasizing the importance of theoretical contributions and implications. This opening session provided valuable insights for all participants, particularly in improving the quality of their scientific publications at a global level.

Following the presentations by the professors, the event continued with presentations by doctoral students. Each participant presented the research proposals they were developing, covering a variety of innovative topics in the social and behavioral sciences with the potential to make significant academic and practical contributions. Prof. Ramayah and Prof. Hiram Ting then provided critical feedback, methodological development suggestions, and recommendations for key literature that could strengthen each participant’s research framework. This intense and constructive interaction provided a valuable learning experience for the students, solidifying the foundation of their dissertation research.

The discussion session proceeded dynamically, with high enthusiasm from all participants. A variety of questions and perspectives emerged during the discussion, reflecting the participants’ strong academic interest and commitment to improving the quality of their research. The speakers also encouraged researchers to continue developing their competencies, expanding their international networks, and consistently producing influential scientific work.

Overall, the Social & Behavioral Science Doctoral Colloquium was highly successful, interactive, and enthusiastic. The presence and active contributions of all participants made each session even more meaningful. Through this activity, it is hoped that doctoral students at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) will be further encouraged to conduct high-quality research and strengthen the role of Indonesian academics in the global research arena.

MD Research Forum “When the Smoke Gets in Your Lungs: Short-Term Effects of Indonesia’s 2015 Forest Fires on Health Care Use”

On Friday, September 26, 2025, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) of FEB UGM once again held the MD Research Forum with the topic “Modelling Multi-Level Predictors of Academic E-Entrepreneurship: Empirical

Evidence across ASEAN Countries.” The event took place offline from 1:30 to 4:00 PM at the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor of the MD FEB UGM Building.

The forum featured Rico Saktiawan Jang Jaya, S.E., MBA, Ph.D. (Lecturer at the Department of Management, FEB UGM) as the keynote speaker. In his presentation, he delivered the findings of his dissertation research, which explored how multi-level factors, including individual, institutional, and environmental aspects, play a role in shaping academic e-entrepreneurship across ASEAN countries.

He emphasized that the development of academic e-entrepreneurship does not solely depend on individual capabilities but is also influenced by institutional support and environmental conditions that foster the creation of academic-based entrepreneurial ecosystems. Thus, this research provides new insights into the importance of cross-level collaboration to strengthen academic innovation in the digital era.

The interactive discussion opened opportunities for participants to ask questions and provide feedback, particularly regarding the practical implications of the research findings for entrepreneurship development in higher education and its potential application across the ASEAN region. Participants showed great enthusiasm by raising critical questions, reflecting a strong interest in gaining a deeper understanding of the dynamics of academic e-entrepreneurship.

The event concluded with a group photo of the speaker, moderator, and all participants. The forum is expected to enrich academic insights while serving as a platform to foster a collaborative and innovative research culture within MD FEB UGM.

Brown Bag Seminar: Algorithmic Management and Resistance among Gig Worker

On Thursday, November 13, 2025, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB)

held a Brown Bag Seminar on “Algorithmic Management and Resistance among Gig Workers” with Novika Grasiaswaty, a PhD student in Management at the University of Glasgow and LPDP Scholarship recipient, as the keynote speaker. This offline event took place from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. WIB in Room 101, 1st Floor of the Master of Science and Doctoral Building, FEB UGM.

In this session, Novika Grasiaswaty shared the results of her research, which focuses on resistance among gig workers, or the forms of activism that emerge among gig workers against algorithm-based management systems. She explained how digital platforms like Gojek and Grab implement algorithmic management to regulate, monitor, and assess worker performance through data and technology. Using a qualitative approach, Novika highlighted how gig workers develop adaptive strategies to maintain autonomy and work dignity amidst increasingly stringent algorithmic control. She also shared her experiences in the dissertation writing process, from developing a theoretical framework to collecting data, as well as the importance of social sensitivity in researching digital labor issues.

Following the presentation, the event continued with an interactive discussion involving master’s and doctoral students from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). Participants enthusiastically asked questions about methodological challenges, the dynamics of research ethics, and the relevance of research findings to labor policy in the digital age. Novika answered frankly and reflectively, sharing various real-life examples from her research experience. This lively discussion not only enriched participants’ insights into the relationship between humans and technology in the modern workplace but also emphasized the importance of critical research in understanding the social implications of digital transformation.

Sharing Session “Studying at Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow: Challenges and Scholarship Opportunities”

On Thursday, November 6, 2025, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) of FEB UGM held a sharing session titled “Studying at Adam Smith Business

School, University of Glasgow: Challenges and Scholarship Opportunities.” The event featured Novika Grasiaswaty, a Ph.D. student in Management at the University of Glasgow and an LPDP Scholarship awardee, as the main speaker. The session took place offline from 1:30 to 3:30 PM in Ruang Satyajaya, 2nd floor, MD FEB UGM Building.

In this session, Novika Grasiaswaty shared her inspiring journey pursuing a doctoral degree at Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious business schools. She recounted her academic experiences, from the application process and adapting to an international academic environment to maintaining motivation throughout her studies.

Beyond academic life abroad, Novika also provided practical insights into LPDP scholarship opportunities, including the selection process, tips for writing persuasive essays, and strategies for excelling in interviews. She emphasized the importance of thorough preparation and a clear sense of purpose in convincing scholarship committees.

The session was highly interactive, with participants enthusiastically engaging in discussions about studying abroad, the academic culture in the UK, and post-study career prospects. Through this activity, MD FEB UGM students were encouraged to pursue international study opportunities and make the most of available scholarship programs.

Writing Scientific, Academic, and Professional Papers: Principles and Linguistic Aspects

On Thursday, November 6, 2025, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) of FEB UGM held a session titled “Writing Scientific, Academic, and Professional Papers: Principles and Linguistic Aspects”, featuring Prof. Dr. Suwardjono, M.Sc., a lecturer from the Department of Accounting, FEB UGM, as

the keynote speaker. The event took place onsite from 08:00 to 12:00 WIB in the Lippo Room, 2nd Floor of the MD FEB UGM Building.

During the session, Prof. Suwardjono delivered an in-depth presentation on the fundamental principles of effective academic writing, emphasizing clarity of ideas, logical accuracy, and consistency in academic language style. He highlighted that academic writing is not merely about conveying information but also about communicating ideas in a systematic, objective, and convincing manner.

In addition, Prof. Suwardjono explained the distinctive characteristics of scientific, academic, and professional writing, noting how each requires different structures and presentation styles. Participants were also encouraged to understand the importance of linguistic aspects such as diction, cohesion, and coherence, which are essential for producing effective and credible written work.

The session was highly interactive, allowing participants to engage directly with the speaker and discuss common challenges in academic writing, including precise word choice and strategies to strengthen academic arguments.

Through this activity, students are expected to enhance their academic and professional writing skills, enabling them to produce high-quality papers that contribute meaningfully to the advancement of knowledge. Resosudarmo from the Australian National University as the keynote speaker. This guest lecture was moderated by Prof. Catur Sugiyanto, Dr., MA., Head of the Doctoral Program in Economics and a

Lecturer in the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UFB). This event was held offline from 10:00–12:30 WIB in the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor, Master of Science and Doctoral Building, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada.

In this guest lecture, Prof. Budy P. Resosudarmo comprehensively discussed marine resource modeling and its application in sustainable economic management. He highlighted the importance of a scientific and data-driven approach to optimizing marine resource utilization without compromising ecosystem balance. Furthermore, Prof. Budy also presented the latest research findings related to the socio-economic dynamics of coastal communities, climate change, and natural resource management policies in the Asia-Pacific region.

Participants actively engaged in the interactive discussion session. Many raised questions about the challenges of implementing a maritime economic model in Indonesia and opportunities for future research collaboration. Through this activity, participants gained a deeper understanding of the importance of integrating economics, environmental science, and public policy in supporting sustainable maritime development.
