In September, 14th 2018, MD Program of FEB UGM in cooperation with the Central Library of UGM conducted workshop related online data-based management and referencing. The workshop was conducted in two sessions. The first session is presented by Mr. Janu, the topic was related to the online data-based of UGM. The next session is presented by Mr. Ide Yulianto, who presented a reference management tools using Zotero.
In the first session, Mr. Janu explain the general information regarding various sources that students can access for many references such as book, journals, articles, research papers, and even course video. Some of the sources were through an online catalogue, search engine, and federated search engine, which was the one that discussed in the first session. Federated search engine is an exclusive search engine that owned by the institution, where the students of UGM can access the search engine by tapping in http://ugm.summon.serialssolutions.com. Through the website, students of UGM can search and find all the collections of the central library of the UGM. Mr. Janu also explain about some strategies to effectively doing the search activity. For example, using the precise keywords and understanding the various terms of keyword according to the topic that we looking for, it can be significantly optimize out effort on doing searching activities.
In the last session, Mr. Ide Yulianto explain about the importance to manage all the references that we collected via many sources. It can also be a strategy to prevent us from plagiarism practice, when we manage our references carefully. There are some tools that can be used to manage our references, such as Zotero, Mendeley, Endnote, and many more. Specifically, Mr. Ide Yulianto focusing his presentation by using Zotero as an example tools for managing references. In general, the workshop was conducted effectively, where the audience enthusiastically optimize the workshop to learn about search and find references activities and how to manage these collected references. Yogyakarta, Thursday, September 13, 2018, Master of Science and Doctoral Program FEB UGM held a guest lecture at the BRI Auditorium. The guest lecture themed “Doing a Literature Review” by Prof. Noel Scott, a professor, and a deputy director at Griffth Institute for Tourism, Griffith University, Australia. Prof. Noel Scott interest in Tourism and he often writes papers on that field.
The REPESEA is a cooperation project among universities in Asia and Europe funded by the European Union through the Erasmus Capacity Building in Higher Education (CHBE) scheme. It is three years cooperation which has been started since October 2016.
In August, 23th 2018, faculty of economics and business of UGM held an event that announce the winner of various competition that were conducted in AACSB week before. For the record, these competitions are in photography, essay writing, and video maker with leadership, engagement, innovation, and impact as the theme of the video. The good news about the competition is most of the winners are comes from MD FEB UGM students.
In photography competition, Rozy Ahimsyah Pratama, a student from master of science in economics is chosen as the favorite winner. In essay writing competition, Lufi Yuana Mursita, a student from master of science in accounting came out as the first winner, and Muhammad Roy Aziz Haryana, a doctorate student in accounting also came out as the third winner. For video maker competition, in leadership topic, the Twin Fighters team: Rizkiani Iskandar and Rizkiana Iskandar from master of science in accounting got the favorite winner. Meanwhile, in the topic of engagement, innovation, and impact, the first winner is the Trianz team: Muh. Ikhsan Alif (master of science in management), Rizkiana Iskandar (master of science in accounting), and Niry Qeen Sari (master of science in accounting). Not solely in these two winners, another team from MD FEB UGM, which is MSc Life: Lufi Yunawa Mursita, Alffiana Nurhayati, and Wuryaningsih also win the favorite winner for video make in topic of engagement, innovation, and impact.
Lufi Yunawa Mursita (Lufi), who came out as the winner of essay writing competition wrote an essay with topic ‘why AASCB matters and why we should push for AACSB reaccreditation’. In his essay, Lufi explain why we choose FEB UGM as the first place to go study, and what we should do as a part of FEB UGM to support the reaccreditation of the AACSB. Accordingly, a clear understanding about the importance of the AACSB as an international accreditation can be a valuable starting point for these issues. The same thing are also explained by our winner of video maker in topic of engagement, innovation, and impact, which is mentioned about the importance to optimize all the time and chance that we got when study in FEB UGM to learn and giving the benefits to society at large, through the network and innovation capabilities that we got in FEB UGM. Yogyakarta – Monday, August 20, 2018, the Doctoral Program of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University held a public defense for I Made Bayu Dirgantara, a doctoral student in the management study program and a lecturer at Diponegoro University Semarang. Dr. I Made Bayu Dirgantara officially holds the 4101st doctorate at Gadjah Mada University and the 255th doctorate at the Faculty of Economics and Business.
In August, 14th-16th 2018, the faculty of economics and business of UGM conducted various events in order to prepare the reaccreditation of AACSB in February 2019.
Three students from the Master of Science in Economics of FEB UGM who accompanied as a team won the best paper at the XX ISEI National Seminar and Congress, held on 8-10 August 2018, at The Trans Luxury Hotel, Bandung. The team members are Nadia Fazira, Riska Dwi Astuti, and Rodhiah Umaroh. They are fourth-semester students in economics study programs. In the interview, they said that joining the competition can be beneficial for them to get more experiences in the scientific field. Riska said, “We got many experiences because we met the government officials and could emulate their knowledge.”
ISEI-Ikatan Sarjana Ekonomi Indonesia (Indonesian Bachelor of Economics Association in English) has central and regional boards. The XX ISEI National Seminar and Congress is a series of the periodical events that held in order to elect the new head of ISEI Center. Perry Warjiyo, the Governor of Bank Indonesia, was elected as the head of the ISEI Center. In this event, the XX ISEI National Seminar and Congress arranged parallel sessions of 12 selected papers. The MSc FEB UGM team’s paper successfully selected, and they were invited to present their paper in this event. The MSc FEB UGM team presented a paper entitled “The Effect of Public Health Insurance on the Informal Sector Workers’ Welfare in Indonesia – Pengaruh Jaminan Kesehatan Masyarakat terhadap Kesejahteraan Pekerja Sektor Informal di Indonesia (in Bahasa).” Their paper was awarded to be the best paper.
Nadia Fazira and Riska Dwi Astuti motivated their colleagues in MD FEB UGM to participate in the events that can deliver new knowledge, experience, and scientific insight. “We as participants do not need to think about losing or win, the most important thing is to follow the process because we will get valuable experience from the process, when it happens [winning the best paper] is a bonus,” Riska said. The paper presented by them is the course assignment that they tried to submit in that event. The final word from Nadia Fazira is when a course requests to produce a paper, finish it seriously, do not just fulfill the course assignments because we can submit it in writing events [Seminar or Conference]. This team also expressed their gratitude to MD FEB UGM because the education in MD FEB UGM encourages them to achieve their dreams. Congratulations to the team, and proud to be MD. (TLU)
In August 10th 2018, the doctorate program of FEB-UGM conducted an open session of doctoral promotion in Auditorium of BRI, MD FEB-UGM building. On this occasion, the doctoral student in management Fitroh Adhillah was the one to be examined. Fitroh Adhillah is a lecturer of Ahmad Dahlan University, one of Islamic University in Yogyakarta.
The open session of doctoral promotion was leaded by Nurul Indarti, Sivilokonom, Cand. Merc., Ph.D as the director of doctorate program in management. The team of promoter was leaded by Prof. Dr. Basu Swastha Dharmmesta, M.B.A., while Dr. Sahid Susilo Nugroho, M.Sc. and Bayu Sutikno, MSM., Ph.D. acted as a co-promoter. The members of examiner team was Dr. Jeanne Ellyawati, MM., Yulia Arisnani W, M.B.A., Ph.D., Dr. Bayu Aji Aritejo, MM., M.Si, and Dr. Anton Agus Setiawan, M.Si.
The dissertation of Fitroh Adhilla entitled “Antecedents of Brand Identification Model and its Effect to Consumer Behavior”. There are at least three gaps that be the main concern of the dissertation, which are classified as theoretical gap, methodological gap, and empirical gap. The theoretical gap is related to the concept of brand identification, where majority of previous study at the same topic focused on the cognitive aspect of the brand identification. The methodological gap is related to the instruments that measure the brand personality, where majority of previous study at the same topic considered less accurate. The empirical gap is related to the object of the study, where majority of previous study solely use the consumers of brand owner. Structural equation model (SEM) was employed to analyze the data, and the results find there are six factors that affected a member of brand community identify a brand, which are: brand personality, prestige, brand reputation, consumer satisfaction, public relation of the company, and social identity.
At the end of the open session of doctoral promotion, Fitroh Adhillah was announced passed the examination with a very satisfying predicated, and can hold the degree as a Doctor in Management. As a promotor, Prof. Dr. Basu Swastha Dharmmesta, M.B.A gave a message to Fitrah Adhillah to keep productive and not to be self-complacent. Prof. Dr. Basu Swastha Dharmmesta do hope that Fitrah Abdillah would keep improving her competences all the time, so it can be benefits for her self, and the society. Dr. Fitroh Adhilla, M.Si was officially got the tittle as the 254th doctor on Faculty of Economics and Business, and the 4099th doctor on Universitas Gadjah Mada. Yogyakarta, Thursday, August 9, 2018, Master of Science and Doctoral Program FEB UGM conducted the second welcoming day for the new students. The second welcoming day was started by morning workout in front of the building of Master of Science and Doctoral Program FEB UGM. Furthermore, live music performances, sports, and some interesting games also were held. The balloons marked “REACH Program” was released into the sky to be the symbol of the ceremonial event.
After the ceremonial event, the REACH program was continued by scholars day out program, an orientation program to introduce the campus environment in the new students. The new students were guided to explore the University facilities. Master of Science and Doctoral Program FEB UGM also added some supporting programs to build up the new students on this program. For example, the Philosophy of Approach and Application of Learning Research Methods provided by Prof. Jogiyanto Hartono., In this chance, Ph.D. Prof. Jogiyanto Hartono., Ph.D. explained 12 criticisms in education that can be responded by Student-Centered Learning (SCL). SCL emphasized improving the quality of thinking, increasing attitude of mind, improving personal quality, and increasing the ability to apply the knowledge. After Prof. Jogiyanto Hartono., Ph.D. had finished explaining about SCL, Prof. Catur Sugiyanto, Ph.D. pointed out some academic tools facilitated by Master of Science and Doctoral Program FEB UGM, such as 42 computer sets, 4 libraries, 11 lecture rooms, 4 study rooms, auditorium halls, faculty lounges, student association rooms, student lounges, stationery shops, photocopy station, prayer rooms, and Bank Mandiri. Besides, Master of Science and Doctoral Program FEB UGM also provides the academic tools software: data processing applications, UGM wi-fi, and e-mail services, SINTESIS, online library catalog access, online journal access, and online thesis and dissertation access. Prof. Catur Sugiyanto, Ph.D. said that all these academic tools can be used by all students to support the learning process in this program.
Communication Skill also had been given by Rr. Tur Nastiti., Ph.D. In this session, Rr. Tur Nastiti., Ph.D. conveyed the importance of communication to support the REACH Program process. She also emphasized that communication skill is contained in the MSc mission. Lastly, Nurul Indarti, Sivilokonom, Cand. Merc., Ph.D. delivered about Writing Academic Documents and Anti-Plagiarism. Nurul Indarti, Sivilokonom, Cand. Merc., Ph.D. explained many common mistakes in the writing process. For example, the writers/authors cannot identify what the kind of their text which is appropriate with the audience. Moreover, they do not explain clearly their arguments, reflect the content, make the conclusion, use the right references, use good and correct language, and even their text is not readable. Besides, Nurul Indarti, Sivilokonom, Cand. Merc., Ph.D. also defined about plagiarism. Plagiarism is a form of academic fraud or crime that occurs when the writers/authors misrepresent the others work as their own. To response that cases, Nurul Indarti, Sivilokonom, Cand. Merc., Ph.D., gave some tips to avoid the plagiarism in the academic world.
The second welcoming day for New Students in Master of Science and Doctoral Program FEB UGM was closed by the announcement of the winners of the photo contest held by FORKOMSI. It was also the end series of the new students’ orientation in Master of Science and Doctoral Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada.
