Thesis Coaching: The Role of Mediation Variables in Multivariate Analysis Models

On Friday, October 18, 2024, the Master of Science and Doctoral (MD) Program of FEB UGM successfully held a regular thesis coaching session titled “The Role of Mediation Variables in Multivariate Analysis Models,” featuring Mrs. Naila Zulfa, M.A., M.S., PGDip., Ph.D., FHEA, a lecturer from the Department of Management, FEB UGM.  

The event was conducted in-person from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM WIB at the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor, Master of Science and Doctoral Building, FEB UGM.  

In this thesis coaching session, students had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of mediating variables, which are often found in various multivariate research studies. Mrs. Naila Zulfa provided an introductory overview of mediation variables in multivariate analysis models, starting from general concepts to the vital role of mediation variables in clarifying the mechanism of relationships between independent and dependent variables, along with their statistical analysis. She demonstrated a dynamic teaching style by presenting examples with step-by-step explanations, engaging directly with the participants, and even using the whiteboard to clarify key concepts. 

This session also opened a session for participants to discuss and share their challenges in data analysis processes, with several students showing interest in the topic of the coaching session. The discussion between students and the lecturer was highly interactive, with numerous inputs from the lecturer offering solutions to their concerns before the thesis coaching session was officially concluded.

Publishing in High-Impact Journals: Insight from Leading Editors

The Master of Science and Doctoral (MD) Program of FEB UGM held a public lecture on September 27, 2024. The event was held with a theme “Publishing in High-Impact Journals: Insight from Leading Editors,” featuring Prof. Mohammad Kabir Hasan from the University of New Orleans. The event was opened by Akhmad Akbar Susamto, Ph.D., from the Faculty of Economics and Business, UGM.  

The event took place from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM WIB at the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor, Master of Science and Doctoral Building, FEB UGM.  

The program began with opening remarks from Akhmad Akbar Susamto, Ph.D. and followed by a brief introduction of Prof. Mohammad Kabir Hasan before he presented guidelines for publishing work in high-quality journals. The discussion highlighted the importance of publishing in high-impact journals as a means to enhance the visibility and influence of academic research. During this session, the speakers emphasized the crucial role that journal editors play in the selection and publication process of scientific articles.

In the Q&A session, Prof. Mohammad Kabir Hasan provided inspiring answers to participants, including concrete examples of articles that have successfully attracted attention and recognition within the academic community. This event is expected to inspire participants to continue striving to write and publish high-quality works.

Blockchain in the Luxury Goods Industry: Institutional, Strategic, and Organizational Considerations

The Master of Science and Doctoral (MD) Program of FEB UGM held a public lecture on April 26, 2024. The event was themed “Blockchain in the Luxury Goods Industry: Institutional, Strategic, and Organizational Considerations,” featuring Prof. Nir Kshetri from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, USA. The event was opened by Prof. Mamduh M. Hanafi, M.B.A., Ph.D., Head of the Doctoral Program in Management at FEB UGM.  

The event took place from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIB at the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor, Master of Science and Doctoral Building, FEB UGM.  

The session began with opening remarks from Prof. Mamduh M. Hanafi, M.B.A.,

Ph.D. and followed by a brief introduction from Prof. Nir Kshetri before he presented on the phenomenon of blockchain. The discussion highlighted how blockchain can enhance the supply chain of luxury goods, which is often threatened by counterfeiting and fraud. He emphasized the importance of technological innovation in addressing challenges across various sectors, including the luxury goods industry, and shared in-depth insights on how this technology can transform stakeholder interactions. Additionally, he provided examples related to the topic of the public lecture.  

The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where several participants had the opportunity to ask questions and engage directly with Prof. Nir Kshetri. This event not only broadened participants’ understanding of the role of innovation in the luxury goods industry but also aimed to help them comprehend the evolving nature of the luxury goods sector in adapting to changing times.

Thesis Coaching: Common Method Bias Testing Methods

Friday, September 20, 2024, the Master of Science and Doctoral (MD) Program of FEB UGM successfully held a regular thesis coaching session titled “Common Method Bias Testing Methods,” featuring Dr. Ridwan Saptoto, S.Psi., M.A., a psychologist and lecturer from the Faculty of Psychology, UGM.  

The event took place from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM WIB at the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor, Master of Science and Doctoral Building, FEB UGM.  

In this thesis coaching session, students had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Common Method Bias (CMB) testing methods, which is often a significant concern in survey-based research. Dr. Ridwan provided a comprehensive introduction to the concept of CMB, starting from its general definition, the potential impacts on research outcomes, and techniques that can be used to detect and address this bias.  The discussion went well, with several students posing questions that reflected their deep interest in the topic. With the conclusion of this event, it is hoped that participants will strengthen their understanding of the importance of CMB testing in their research.

Creating Solutions: The Intersection of Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship

Monday, September 23, 2024, the Master of Science and Doctoral (MD) Program of FEB UGM held an engaging event titled “Creating Solutions: The Intersection of Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship,” featuring Prof. Renato Pereira from ISCTE Business School as the keynote speaker. The public lecture was opened by Azelia Alma Shafira, S.E., M.Sc., a lecturer from the Department of Management, FEB UGM.  

The event took place from 12:30 to 13:30 PM WIB at the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor, Master of Science and Doctoral Building, FEB UGM.  

The public lecture began with a brief introduction by Prof. Renato Pereira. In his presentation, he emphasized the importance of innovation in creating sustainable solutions that can have a positive impact on society. Prof. Pereira then explained various aspects of social entrepreneurship and its connection to innovative approaches. He also presented several examples of innovation and social entrepreneurship, including successful initiatives that have empowered communities and driven social change.

MD Accounting Research Forum (MDREFO)

Friday, September 13, 2024, the Master of Science and Doctoral (MD) Program of FEB UGM successfully held the MD Accounting Research Forum (MDREFO) with the title “Auditors’ Professional Skepticism Over Email and Video Responses: Evidence from Client Reputation in Remote Audits.” The event featured a speaker from the Department of Accounting at FEB, Arizona Mustikarini, Ph.D., from Universitas Gadjah Mada.  

This event was held in person at the Bakrie Room, 2nd Floor, Master of Science and Doctoral Building, FEB UGM, from 8:00 to 9:30 AM WIB.  

In this academic discussion, Arizona Mustikarini presented her compelling research on auditors’ professional skepticism when responding to emails and video communications during remote audits, supported by evidence from client reputation. The research provided valuable insights into how client reputation and the mode of communication in remote audits can influence auditor professionalism and decision-making. The discussion also emphasized the crucial role of auditors in maintaining the integrity of the audit process, especially as audits increasingly shift towards digital and remote formats. This research offers a new perspective for audit professionals and policymakers on addressing emerging challenges in digital audits.  

Participants in the forum were enthusiastic about the speaker’s presentation, which they found highly engaging. It is hoped that this event will enhance participants’ knowledge and inspire them to make contributions in the field.

The Master of Science and Doctoral Programs at FEB UGM officially graduated 20 Master of Science and Doctoral students on July 24, 2024. The July 2024 Graduation Celebration,held in the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor, Master of Science and Doctoral Building, FEB UGM, was filled with gratitude and happiness. The event began with a report from the management of the MD FEB UGM Program, delivered by Prof. Mamduh Mahmadah Hanafi, M.B.A., Ph.D., as the Head of the Doctoral Program in Management Science, representing the program management. Following that, Prof. Dr. Didi Achjari, S.E., M.Com., Ak., CA., Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business UGM, gave his remarks. Congratulations and a sense of pride filled the celebration.
