Yogyakarta – Tuesday, September 3, 2019, Master of Science and Doctorate Program of FEB UGM in collaboration with MARA University of Technology, Malaysia held “Collaborative Discussion among Students of UiTM and MD FEB UGM”. This event was held in the Lippo Room, MD FEB UGM Building. Participants from the MD FEB UGM were 12 doctoral students and from UiTM, there were 12 students and one of the UiTM lecturer as a coordinator. The purpose of this event is to share research and academic environment of each institution. Prof. Catur Sugiyanto as Chair of the Doctorate Program in Economics, opened this event. It was continued by Dr. Nabila to introduce every participant of UiTM.
Dr. Tur Nastiti, a manager of MD FEB UGM who organized this event, arranged the students’ sitting layout in order the students of UiTM and UGM interact with each other. There two sessions in this event distinguished to be presentation and discussion that was led by Linda, a doctoral student in Management FEB UGM. There are two presenters who were representatives of the Doctorate Program FEB UGM, and four presenters who represented four groups from UiTM. The presenters were given 5 – 10 minutes to present their papers, and then it was continued by the question and answer session.
The first presentation was conducted by participants from UiTM that consist of Master of Business Administration (MBA) students. They focused on explaining the Malaysian Sabah Region case study. The first group discussed “Sabah Tourism.” The speaker mentioned some tourist destinations in Sabah. She tried to explore there are many potential tourist destinations that can be developed in Sabah. The materials from the first speaker is related to the materials of the second speaker. She discussed “Sabah Culture.” In this chance, she told about the culture and language that existed in Sabah. In addition, she stressed the lack of awareness about the local culture in Sabah. She also mentioned the handicraft industry in Sabah is still underdeveloped, even dominated by handicrafts from the Philippines and Indonesia.
The third speaker presented “Palm Oil Industry in Sabah.” He explained that Sabah is the second largest industrial center after Indonesia. Economically, he explained the profit and economic potential of Sabah. Then, the last speaker from UiTM discussed the issue of “Aerospace in Sabah.” He explained that the development of aerospace in Sabah previously received less attention from the government. However, this time has begun to be considered. He also emphasized how important the development of the aerospace industry is to attract tourists.
The presentation was followed by presentations from UGM, which consisted of two presenters, namely Puput and Supeni, who are doctoral students of MD FEB UGM. On this occasion, Puput explained more about how his PhD journey to find topics in his research for his dissertation. She told that she took the topic “Holding Behavior in Capital Market” as the focus of his dissertation. Puput said that the papers from doctoral students at MD FEB UGM are different from the papers that have been explained by MBA students from UiTM because the focus of the discussion is not the case but rather the theoretical gap. Puput explained how she used Bibliometric Tools in his theoretical studies to find theoretical gaps.
The second presentation was delivered by Supeni, a doctoral student in Accounting FEB UGM. On this occasion, Supeni gave an overview of how to find research ideas. She emphasized the important role of researchers today. She also told how she got motivation and inspiration in conducting research.
After the presentation session was finished, the event continued with question and answer from the participants. Some participants from UiTM Malaysia asked more questions about the Doctorate Program FEB UGM and also the tourist destinations in Indonesia. The discussion was closed by Linda as the leader of the sharing session and then continued by Dr. Tus Nastiti stated some closing sentences. (TLU)
