On Saturday (03/20/2021), the Master of Science program FEB UGM held an online Design Thinking Workshop Batch 1 through Zoom meeting. This event is one part of the REACH (Researcher’s Enrichment) Program. Design Thinking Workshop is a mandatory program which aims to create and improve students’ thinking skills critically, creatively, and innovatively. The development of this mindset will support the ability to analyze comprehensively, deeply, and systematically, so it is in line with the Master of Science program at FEB UGM, namely forming graduates who are capable of conducting independent research and knowledgeable with deep theoretical concepts.
The speakers in the Design Thinking Workshop Batch 1 were Prof. Nurul Indarti, Sivilokonom, Cand.Merc., Ph.D. Workshop participants were 38 students in the Master of Science program FEB UGM period 2019/2. The event took place from 08.00-15.30 WIB. This Design Thinking Workshop was very conducive from the beginning until the end, which started from material explanation to discussion sessions.
For approximately 7.5 hours, all participants attended a series of events divided into three sessions, including material presentation sessions, interactive discussions, and case studies. In the case study session, participants divided into six groups for discussing the cases selected by the speaker. There were three cases given, namely Lady Gaga, LV in India, and Toyota recalls. Each case was discussed by two groups. Each group representative chose the desired case and then discussed it with the group. The discussion in each group was held in the breakout room Zoom meeting for 30 minutes. After finished, groups 1-6 presented their discussion’s result in the form of a description, such as a problem and its solution.
The Design Thinking Workshop concept was very interesting. All participants were actively involved in a series of activities by practicing their thinking skills and sharpening their analytical power. The concept trains Master of Science students to be more sensitive to the environment, where they are motivated to find a solution to an existing problem. The critical mindset that is highly emphasized in the Design Thinking Workshop can answer anxiety over environmental dynamics. Human resources will be better able to adapt and generate innovation. The discussions that took place in this workshop event were able to facilitate Master of Science students to develop and sharpen their thinking skills. Finally, the event finished smoothly and ended with a group photo session.
