Yogyakarta – June 19th, 2021

Master of Science and Doctoral Program FEB UGM held an online Design Thinking Workshop, which is the one part of REACH (Researcher’s Enrichment) Program. This academic activity which is held regularly aims to improve the ability to think critically, creatively, and innovatively, which is systematically arranged for Master of Science students.

The participants of the DTW activity are Master of Science in Accounting and Management students batch 2020/1. The total number of participants is 38 people. Prof. Nurul Indarti, Sivilokonom, Cand. Merc, Ph.D., Head of the Management Department of FEB UGM, was present as a speaker. He delivered material on design thinking, which discussed the importance of conceptual thinking to find solutions to a problem critically, creatively, and innovatively. The conceptual thinking process will run comprehensively with a systematic thinking process. Through such design thinking, problem analysis and solution solutions will be more precise and comprehensive.

During the session which lasted approximately 7.5 hours, all participants were actively involved in the discussion process. All participants also participated in a whole series of events, which was divided into three sessions, such as material presentation sessions, interactive discussions, and case studies. In the case study session, participants were divided into six groups to then discuss the three cases given. Prof. Nurul gave three topics of concern (Disney, Louis Vuitton, Lady Gaga). Each case was discussed by two groups. After that, each participant joins his group in the breakout room Zoom meeting for 30 minutes to discuss the topic. After that, each group representative presented the results of their discussion in the main session. In the second stage, each group was discussed again to find solutions to the problem points that have been explored, then presented them.

The concept of the Design Thinking Workshop (DTW) is very interesting. Such design thinking can train critical and comprehensive thinking skills from various points of view to sharpen analysis. Thus, students can be trained to be more sensitive to the environment, which is moved to find a solution to an existing problem. Critical and creative thinking can lead to finding the right solution. The reflection process is also needed at the final stage of design thinking as a lesson from the thinking process that has been passed, so that it will be better in the future.
