Yogyakarta – Thursday, December 19th 2019. The Master of Science and Doctoral Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (MD FEB UGM) held a workshop entitled “Experimental Design Workshop”. A total of 50 students in the Master of Science and Doctoral program participated in activities aimed at practicing critical and analytical thinking skills in the design of experimental research. During the duration of eight hours, in four (4) interactive sessions, participants are invited to get acquainted with theories about experimental design, understand the application of experimental design, find out how the application of experimental design, and finally in groups to collaborate on new projects.
Present as the speaker, Dr. Felix Septianto, lecturer in the Department of Marketing, University of Auckland Business School. In the first session, the lecturer who completed the Master’s program at Kyung Hee University, South Korea, delivered the basics of causality and experimental research building hypotheses and operationalizing variables, building independent variables, measuring dependent variables, controlling issues, conducting checks and pretests, and making designs experimental.
Furthermore, in the second session was presented data and recent studies regarding the application of experimental designs. It is prominent when researchers formulate clear research objectives in order to building strong conceptual models, thus the hypotheses provide analytical logic that can provide strong results and conclusions.
Participants, in groups, were invited to compile an experimental research project in the format provided in the third session. Groups can create projects in the form of replication or extension in a mixed study or experimental format. According to Dr. Felix “the conceptual design of research should be arranged as simple as possible, thus it can provide strong results”.
Each group collaborates on a research project that is structured to develop an idea that can be obtained through conceptually replicating a study (in a new context or using a new construct), building upon a review paper, translating an idea from a relevant field, examining a topic from a different theoretical perspective, and combining ideas from relevant, yet distinct topics. In this last session, representatives of each group presented a research project within 5-10 minutes and then received a feedback from Dr. Felix. (RP)
