On Friday, October 17, 2025, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) once again held the MD Research Forum on the topic “Navigating Power-Dependence and Paradoxes: Studies of Human Resource Management at Work Integration Social Enterprises in Japan.” This event took place offline from 9:00–11:30 a.m. WIB in the Lippo Room, W Floor, MD Building, FEB UGM.
The forum featured Bita Puspitasari, S.E., M.Econ., Ph.D. (Lecturer in the Department of Management, FEB UGM) as the keynote speaker. In her presentation, she presented the results of her dissertation research, which reexamines the concept of accountability not only as an administrative mechanism but also as a social construct influenced by the organizational context and interactions between stakeholders in work integration social enterprises (WISE) in Japan.
Ms. Bita emphasized that in the context of WISE, the relationship between power and dependency creates complex dynamics in human resource management practices. Accountability, in this context, is not simply about adherence to formal procedures, but also a social practice that reflects values, beliefs, and moral responsibility toward employees, communities, and organizational partners. With
this perspective, her research provides new insights into how accountability can be a tool for navigating the paradox between social and economic demands, while simultaneously strengthening the legitimacy and sustainability of social organizations.
The discussion was interactive, with participants raising critical questions, particularly regarding topics, methods, and tools used in qualitative research. This event provided a space for reflection, enriching participants’ insights, opening new perspectives on understanding human resource management practices in the social sector, and encouraging the development of more contextual and relevant research ideas.
The event concluded with a group photo session with the speakers and all participants. Through this forum, MD FEB UGM reaffirmed its role as a platform for developing academic thought and research that contributes significantly to both academia and professional practice.
