Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) FEB UGM successfully held a routine thesis coaching session titled “Web Scraping: How to Scrap Data from a Website (Cases: Financial Reports & Social Media Activities)” with guest speaker Yunita Sari, S.Kom., M.Sc., Ph.D., a lecturer from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UGM.

The event was conducted offline from 9:00 to 11:30 AM in the BRI Auditorium, 3rd Floor, Master of Science and Doctoral Building, FEB UGM.

In this thesis coaching session, students had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of web scraping, starting from an introductory overview to practical tips on what to do and avoid when engaging in web scraping. Mrs. Yunita Sari began the session with a general introduction to the basic concepts of web scraping, including the tools used and the various technical steps involved in accessing and processing data from websites. She emphasized that web scraping is an effective method for obtaining secondary data for research, particularly in the areas of financial reports and social media activities.

She also utilized real-world case studies, ranging from collecting financial report data from official company websites to gathering social media activity data for sentiment analysis. To facilitate better understanding, she used an interactive screen and provided live demonstrations that the participants could follow. The session also included an interactive discussion, where students raised various questions about technical challenges, such as limitations posed by certain website structures.
