Yogyakarta-Friday, August 28, 2020. Doctoral Program Student and Alumni Association, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (IMADEBGAMA) held Sharing Session #2 entitled “Casual and Quality Talk” with the topic “Publications and Writing at UGM Sharing Session”. This virtual discussion forum was opened by the Manager for Academic, Student and Cooperation Affairs, Rr. Tur Nastiti, M.Sc., Ph.D.

Present as a speaker were Andy Susilo Lukito Budi, S.E., M.Bus., one of the outstanding students in the Doctoral in Management Program of FEB UGM. Several important points conveyed by the lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, Jakarta, were related to the process of discussing publications with promoters, how to respond to comments from reviewers and technical experts in writing and publication.

In the publication process with the promoter, it is necessary to prepare a manuscript (draft paper which can be in the form of theoretical or conceptual, empirical, and criticism or literature review papers), determine the journal then agree with the promoter, check and adjust the draft paper to the writing style requested by the journal, besides discuss the draft manuscript with the promoter before submitting the file.

In general, there will be at least four iterations in the publication process, namely: i) iteration 1 sends the initial manuscript which will be checked by the editor in accordance with the standards and objectives of the journal concerned. If the editor decides to continue, the manuscript will begin processing the substance review; ii) iteration 2, receiving comments from reviewers which usually contain information on rejected or major revision. If it turns out to be rejected then look for another paper, while for the major revision it takes 1-2 months to change the contents of the manuscript; iii) iteration 3 after receiving comments from reviewers which are usually minor revisions, the team needs 2-3 weeks to change the manuscript “surface”; iv) iteration 4 at this stage if the process is streamlined, then the manuscript status becomes Accepted. Other than that, there will be a signing of the copy right to publication in the journal, the team is not allowed to distribute the article before the journal confirms the early cite of the article.

In addition to the technical matters above, according to him some tips that need to be considered during the process of writing articles are understanding the nature of the promoter/co-promoter, being active and always giving suggestions to the promoter/co-promoter for them to decide, one time it is necessary to position ourselves more inferiorly, and regardless of the order of the authors’ names, students still need to give their utmost.
