As part of the 46th-anniversary celebrations of the Master of Science and Doctoral (MD) program at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM), the faculty organized a Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. The event saw participation from Master of Science and Doctoral students across various fields, including Accounting, Economics, and Management. It served as a platform for students to hone their scientific communication skills while conveying the essence of their research to an audience in a concise, engaging, and accessible manner.
Fifteen students participated in the competition, presenting the theses or dissertations they are currently working on within a strict three-minute time limit. The primary challenge lay in the participants’ ability to effectively explain their research problems, methodologies, findings, and contributions within this limited timeframe, all while maintaining scientific rigor.
Throughout the competition, participants showcased a diverse range of research topics, reflecting the breadth of study across various disciplines. Their presentations not only highlighted the quality of their ongoing research but also demonstrated their capacity to construct clear, systematic, and persuasive narratives.
Following an evaluation by a panel of judges, three top participants were selected for their ability to present their research in a comprehensive, engaging, and accessible way. First place was awarded to Nuryanti Taufik from the Doctoral Program in Management, followed by Widya Ayu Amelia (also from the Doctoral Program in Management) in second place, and Mughni BW Pradikta from the Master of Science Program in Economics in third place.
The success of these winners underscores that scientific communication is a vital competency for any researcher, complementing the ability to conduct high-quality research. Through effective communication, research findings can not only be understood by the academic community but also hold the potential to create a broader impact on society. The Three Minutes Thesis competition is expected to encourage students to become more confident in presenting their research findings, strengthen a productive academic culture, and enhance the quality of research dissemination within the Faculty of Economics and Business at UGM (FEB UGM). This initiative also serves as a testament to the commitment of MD FEB UGM in supporting the development of student competencies, both in the realm of research and scientific communication.
