New Normal: An Effective Way for Online Learning

Yogyakarta-Thursday, September 10th, 2020. The Masters Student Communication Forum (FORKOMSI), Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada University held a virtual seminar entitled “New Normal: Effective Ways for Online Learning”. The webinar, which was organized by one of the student organizations in the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) FEB UGM, is a preparation for welcoming the new semester lectures in the academic year 2020/2021. In addition, lecture activities at FEB UGM will begin on September 14th, 2020 and be carried out online learning in response to the pandemic status that is increasingly spreading.

The webinar was opened with a speech delivered by Rr. Tur Nastiti, M.Si., Ph.D, Manager of Academic, Student, and Cooperation Affairs. A total of 100 participants presented in the virtual forum to listen to the presentation from two (2) speakers, namely: (1) Dr. Sumaryono, M.Si, Psychologist., Lecturer at the Faculty of Psychology UGM and Chairman of the Association of Industrial and Organizational Psychology; and (2) I Made Andi Arsana, Ph.D., Lecturer at the UGM Faculty of Engineering and Author of Books “Anak Desa Keliling Dunia dan Beyond Borders”. In his presentation entitled “Getting used to independent learning”, Dr. Sumaryono explained that the process and experience in obtaining knowledge can be drew independently by utilizing various available learning resources. The pandemic forces all parties to take advantage of online media to learn and train themselves by maintaining discipline as the main challenge.

The challenge of self-study with a completely online system is that asymmetrical information to acute overwhelmed regarding to device attachments. However, through his material entitled “Tips & Tricks You Can Do During Online Lectures”, I Made Andi Arsana suggested that there should be effective communication between lecturers and students in determining preferences for learning activities by utilizing creative media such as videos. Learning resources for students are of various types so an adaptive attitude is needed in learning by drawing inspiration through the internet and contemporary social media applications.

The two speakers were very capable in conveying knowledge, both in the form of information and experience. This encourages the process that the event can run smoothly and successfully with the full interest of the participants presented. (RP)
