On Monday, May 4, 2026, the Master of Science and Doctoral Program (MD) of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) held a workshop titled “Academic Writing for Higher Impact Journals” in the Bakrie Room, 2nd Floor of the MD FEB UGM Building. This activity was a collaboration between MD FEB UGM and the Journal of Indonesian Economy and Business (JIEB FEB UGM) as an effort to improve the quality of scientific publications by students and academics.
The workshop featured Prof. Frendy from Nagoya University of Commerce and Business as the main speaker, moderated by Ms. Arika Artiningsih, Ph.D., Head of the Publication Unit and Lecturer in the Department of Accounting, FEB UGM. In his presentation, Prof. Frendy discussed strategies for writing effective scientific articles to make a strong contribution and increase the chance of being published in reputable journals. He emphasized the importance of clear writing structure, strong arguments, and the relevance of research topics to meet global literature needs. Furthermore, he highlighted that research that supports only one perspective without any contradictions tends to have limited contribution, so researchers need to be able to identify and resolve tensions between theories to generate new insights.
Furthermore, participants were encouraged to understand how to prepare manuscripts that not only meet academic standards but also have broader scientific appeal and impact. Various practical tips regarding the submission process, responding to reviewers, and strategies for selecting target journals were also discussed to help participants increase their chances of publication. Participants were also guided to develop a concise research framework using a research pitching approach, which encouraged them to discuss research ideas with colleagues to obtain feedback on relevance, theoretical strength, and the feasibility of data and methods.
The workshop was interactive, with participants enthusiastically participating in the discussion and sharing experiences related to academic writing. Through this workshop, it is hoped that MD FEB UGM students and academics will be better prepared to produce high-quality publications that contribute to the development of science at the international level.
